NDRoads is the official travel information (511) app for the state of North Dakota. The NDRoads app an interactive map and textual display of current road conditions, weather, and construction zones. Over 100,000 people have installed NDRoads, with usage spiking to 10,000 users per day during the icy North Dakota winter storms.

The app allows users to save "bookmarks" that include the current map extent and active overlays. The app also includes live views from a number of weather cameras throughout the state of ND.

Implementation Notes

The NDRoads app is a JavaScript-heavy application powered by wq.app. Custom wq/store.js instances load and store JSON data from an ArcGIS server and a custom ASP-powered web service, while wq/router.js handles navigation between application screens. The interactive map is powered by Leaflet, with the esri-leaflet plugin to load map imagery from the ArcGIS server.

The NDRoads app initially was a web-only app, but was eventually wrapped with Visual Studio Tools for Apache Cordova for distribution on the Android, iOS, and Windows native app stores to meet popular expectations.
